Who issued the registration mark?
This list is intended to provide a quick key to the location lists, especially for those cases where the authority who issued a particular series is not known.
Where authorities changed their names or merged or the letters were re-allocated they are only separately detailed in the list if the location of surviving records is affected.
Note that with three-letter marks, it is the last two which are the significant ones so that, for example, Hampshire has BAA, CAA, DAA and so on.
Because the location list is divided into three sections and also because many of the local authorities no longer exist under the same names, a code is given after the registration mark to show in which list a particular authority will be found.
The codes are E (England and Wales), S (Scotland) and I (Ireland).
